Description
This hands-on wheel throwing workshop is focused on making things to fire in our Cone 10 Gas Kiln, Shirley! Lessons cater to both beginner and intermediate students. Class times will combine demonstrations and one-on-one guidance from our experienced instructor. Whether you’re shaping your first clay vessel or enhancing your repertoire of techniques, this class is designed to support and elevate your wheel-throwing talents.
No prior experience with clay is necessary. Beginners will learn foundational wheel throwing and glazing skills while working to create basic forms like cups, bowls, and more. Intermediate students will work on technical challenges such as throwing larger, making multiples, and more complex forms.
Experiment with finishing your pieces using our large selection of cone 10 glazes, and learn how the atmosphere of our manual gas kiln affects these glazes and creates an element of surprise in its range of effects.
The structure of this workshop is a bit different than our regular 10-week workshops. A large focus of the workshop is centered around loading and firing the gas kiln, so please note these dates:
Friday, February 21st: Class in the morning, kiln loading starting at 6pm (attendance optional)
Saturday, February 22nd: Firing day (come-and-go as you can, 7am-7pm)
Tuesday, February 25th: Unload kiln 6pm (attendance optional)
First Bisque Deadline: Place work on Cone 10 shelf by Sunday, February 16th
Last Bisque Deadline: Place work on Cone 10 shelf by Sunday, March 16th
The Final Firing will take place after class concludes, and the kiln will be unloaded on Tuesday, April 8th, starting at 6:00 PM. Everyone is welcome to attend the unloading. If you are unable to attend that evening, your fired work will be available for pickup during Open Studio hours.
