Description

Do you know a kid who loves to draw and read comics? Maybe you should join us this year for Drawing and Storytelling comic camp with Jacob Wooton. Simple in concept and yet like a shark, elegant in its design, comics camp has existed much in its present form for almost a decade. Students join up to draw together, practice skills and explore the city a little bit while doing it. Each day will start in the studio, where we learn new skills and work on our submission for the collaborative comics zine we will be producing together. We take daily field trips to stretch our legs and minds, practicing observational drawing as we go.  Field trips to Books with Pictures, SE Portland’s coolest comic shop, the IPRC to make one page zines, and OMSI to play and explore. Reach out to instructor with questions: jwooton@nullcedarwoodschool.org

This year we are teaming up with Ulna art studio so we will have a really nice place to create and feel inspired by the creative energy that flows through that space like an electrical current, and some comfy couches to read comics on and relax after we return from adventures.

Each participant gets a sketch book, a gift pack of rad comics from Books with Pictures and two copies of the 18th edition of “Out Of Our Heads” the long running comics compilation produced by the kids of comics camp over the course of many years. There is a $20 supply fee.

Jacob Wooton is an Ulna Community artist and painter who also is an instructor at Cedarwood School! From Jacob: JACOB WOOTON AS I GET OLDER I SEEM TO GET MORE ENJOYMENT FROM PAINTING AND BEING OUTSIDE, SO I DO AS MUCH OF BOTH AS POSSIBLE, USUALLY IN CONJUNCTION. I BELIEVE THE UNIVERSE ADORES ME. IT DEMONSTRATES AS MUCH TO ME, WITH THE CONSTANT BARRAGE OF STRANGE AND BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCES THAT FILL THE DAYS.  I DON’T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO BUT PAY ATTENTION. I PAY ATTENTION BY MAKING ART. I PAY ATTENTION WITH MY SENSES. PAYING ATTENTION IS HOW I SHOW GRATITUDE. MAYBE THAT’S WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT.  @LIVINGTHINGSUNION

About the classroom space: Ulna studio is a creative space located on the 2nd floor of the Portland Storage Building at 215 SE Morrison St. There is elevator access upon arrival for your in-person class, but exiting students have the option to walk down a stairway.
